Arts, anthropology and queer research and activism in the U.S.

The PoliTeSse Research Centre (Politics and Theories of Sexuality, University of Verona) organises a discussion meeting on the themes of anthropology and the arts in relation to the history of feminist and LGBTQ activism in the United States.

The renowned anthropologist and pioneer of LGBTQ studies Esther Newton, lecturer and performer Holly Hughes and filmmaker Jean Carlomusto will be guests in dialogue. They will explore the history of 'lesbofeminism', the 'culture wars' and the 'lesbian sex wars', addressing issues such as freedom of speech for minority people and the relationship between feminism and gender identity through the lens of butch identity.

Scenes from Carlomusto's latest film Esther Newton Made Me Gay will also be screened, and some extracts from Newton's book My Butch Career will be read.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, 27 September 2022, from 4.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. It is possible to participate online on the Zoom platform (Meeting ID: 890 1567 5246 Passcode: 249265).
