Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia International Award

On February 6th, in the framework of the 2024 Week of Women and Girls in Science, the Embassy of Italy hosts the Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia International Award Ceremony, to continue promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in science.

The Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia International Award, at its first edition, is named after the first woman in the modern world who received a doctoral degree in Padua, Italy (1678).

The award celebrates the contribution of women scientists and scholars to research, innovation, and the development of a scientific culture based on equality.

Today Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia is portrayed as an extraordinary example of intellectual power and as an early symbol of a society's recognition of a woman's capacity to leave a mark in subjects traditionally precluded to women, such as theology, philosophy and mathematics. prize of the same name was awarded from 2018 to 2022 to Italian postgraduate students and young researchers dealing with women’s and gender studies in academia.

The award is promoted by the Italian Cultural Institute (ICI) of New York in collaboration with the Italian Scientists and Scholars in North America Foundation (ISSNAF) and the Elena Cornaro Center of the University of Padua. It is intended for women scientists of Italian citizenship who work in the US and have distinguished themselves for excellence in research, continuity of commitment, vision and leadership.
